Climate change and misinformation are often treated as separate research problems. They are not. Both are shaped by tensions between individual behaviour, collective action, and vested interests — and both suffer when research stays stuck at the level of correcting isolated false claims.
A brief communication in Nature Human Behaviour by Tobia Spampatti, Bojana Većkalov, Sandra J. Geiger, Sander van der Linden, Stephan Lewandowsky, and Matthew J. Hornsey argues that climate psychology already has hard-won lessons that misinformation research can use. The authors distill six insights intended to strengthen policy relevance, systems thinking, and resilience when the field comes under attack.
The Six Insights
1. Information is rarely sufficient. Knowing more facts does not automatically produce meaningful change. Climate psychology has long shown that information campaigns underperform when identity, norms, emotion, and structural constraints dominate. Misinformation research that treats “more accurate information” as the main outcome risks repeating that mistake.
2. Prioritise real-world behaviour. Belief updating and accuracy ratings matter, but they are intermediate measures. The field needs stronger attention to sharing decisions, civic actions, organisational practices, and other behaviours that actually change information environments.
3. Account for context sensitivity. Interventions that work in one country, platform, or political climate may fail in another. Context is not noise — it is part of the phenomenon.
4. Hold individual and system-level perspectives together. Focusing only on individual susceptibility can miss how platforms, incentives, institutions, and organised actors structure the problem. Focusing only on systems can miss how people process and resist manipulative content. Climate psychology has spent years navigating that dual lens; misinformation research needs the same balance.
5. Verify company collaborations. Partnerships with platforms or industry can expand reach — and can also create conflicts of interest, constrained research questions, or perceived capture. The authors urge careful scrutiny of collaborations, not reflexive rejection or uncritical embrace.
6. Organise for impact and resilience. Misinformation research is itself a target of coordinated criticism and bad-faith attacks. The climate psychology experience suggests that durable impact requires organised communities, transparent methods, and institutional resilience — not only clever individual studies.
Why This Intersection Matters
For work at the climate–misinformation boundary, this piece is useful precisely because it refuses a false choice between “climate communication” and “misinformation science.” Climate denial, delay narratives, and coordinated influence campaigns sit at that intersection.
