Introduction
Weak science communication is not a historical footnote in the climate story. It is still doing active damage to climate politics today — giving cover for delay, manufacturing false controversy over settled findings, and shaping what politicians feel is safe to propose, long after the underlying science stopped being seriously contested by anyone doing the work. If there is one clear lesson from the last several decades of climate communication, it’s that “the science is correct” is necessary but nowhere near sufficient; how that science reaches, and is understood by, the public turns out to matter just as much as the science itself.
We think the logical response to that lesson is to go further than “communicate better.” The goal should be to actively build science-aware societies — publics that don’t just receive scientific conclusions passively, but understand, at least roughly, how science actually works: that it updates, that uncertainty is normal rather than a sign of failure, that consensus is earned through replication and scrutiny rather than declared by authority. Taken far enough, this is really a project of turning passive audiences into citizen scientists — people who see themselves as capable of participating in producing and evaluating evidence, not just consuming its conclusions.
That goal runs headlong into a second, less-discussed problem, and into an unconventional way it might be addressed.
Science Has a Democratic-Access Problem
Science itself has a structural access gap. People and regions with higher societal status and income have meaningfully better access to producing science — to being funded to do it, to having their questions taken seriously within it, to shaping its priorities — and better access to benefiting from what it produces once it exists. This is not a claim that science is arbitrary or that its findings are less true depending on who is asking the question. It’s a claim about access to the process: who gets to be in the room, whose problems get studied, and who ends up positioned as a grateful recipient of expertise rather than a participant in generating it.
That pattern is structurally similar to who holds power and voice in the climate crisis itself — the people and regions least responsible for emissions, and often least represented in the rooms where climate science gets funded and interpreted, are frequently the ones most exposed to its consequences. We don’t think that’s a coincidence of two unrelated problems sharing a metaphor. We think closing the climate-communication gap and closing the science-access gap are, practically speaking, the same underlying project: both are about who gets treated as a legitimate participant in producing and using knowledge, rather than merely as its audience.
A Parallel Problem in Art
Art faces a bottleneck that is structurally similar, even though the mechanism is different. Funding for art frequently depends on a comparatively small group of buyers, patrons, galleries, and institutions, whose taste and priorities end up determining which work gets made, whose perspective it reflects, and — critically — who it ultimately reaches. That’s not identical to the science-access problem. Science’s gatekeeping runs through institutional credentialing, grant committees, and peer review; art’s runs through a market and a much smaller, wealthier set of gatekeepers. But the shape of the outcome rhymes: in both fields, a narrow funding gate ends up quietly determining which parts of the field the public ever gets to see, participate in, or feel invited into.
That parallel is the specific reason we’re interested in art-science-technology collaboration — not as a stylistic add-on to science communication, where art illustrates conclusions that science has already reached on its own, but as a genuine research question: can bringing scientific topics and methods into art contexts, deliberately located outside pure academic or institutional framing, help pull both fields out of their respective gatekeeping problems at the same time? We want to be careful not to overstate the case here. Public, cross-disciplinary work doesn’t fix either field’s underlying funding structure on its own — a gallery show doesn’t reform a grant committee, and a science-art residency doesn’t change who sits on it. But work that genuinely straddles both worlds might reach people, and legitimize their participation, in ways that stay closed off inside either field working alone. That hypothesis — not a settled conclusion — is what we want to research.
Why Technology, Specifically
Adding technologists to this mix is not, for us, a required ingredient. A great deal of valuable art-science collaboration doesn’t involve a distinct “technology” layer at all — it’s just artists and scientists working together directly. But technology is a particularly interesting third party to bring in, precisely because it carries two live, unresolved histories at the same time, and neither has won out over the other. On one hand, technology has a long and ongoing track record of being built purely for profit extraction — attention capture, enclosure of previously open resources, and the concentration of value in a small number of platforms. On the other hand, it has an equally long, equally active history of public-good and intrinsically motivated collaborative work: open-source software, civic tech, public research infrastructure, and communities that build and maintain shared tools for reasons that have nothing to do with monetization.
That duality means technologist involvement in this kind of collaboration is not a settled positive or negative — it could reproduce exactly the gatekeeping problems we’re trying to address, by adding another layer of proprietary tooling and platform dependency, or it could genuinely widen access, by making participation cheaper and more distributed than either the art market or the academic grant system currently allows. We think that ambiguity is exactly why it’s worth researching directly, rather than assuming either outcome in advance and designing around that assumption.
We’re Not Starting From Nothing
This isn’t a new idea, and we don’t want to present it as if it were. Leonardo/ISAST — the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology — has documented and organized work at precisely this intersection since 1968, through the Leonardo journal, published by MIT Press. The journal was founded by kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina specifically to serve as an international channel of communication among artists using science and emerging technology in their work, at a moment when almost no other venue treated that combination as a serious field in its own right.
Roger F. Malina — physicist, astronomer, and, since 1982, Executive Editor of Leonardo Publications — has spent decades identifying what he calls “New Leonardos”: people building genuinely hybrid practices across art, science, and engineering, rather than treating art as illustration for scientific conclusions already reached elsewhere, or treating science as raw material for aesthetic borrowing. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Art and Technology and Professor of Physics at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he co-founded the ArtSciLab, and he continues to be active in exactly the kind of interdisciplinary institution-building this space requires — including, in 2026, work on the “Ciber-Villages” concept exploring how loosely connected communities of artists, scientists, and technologists might document and reactivate dormant collaborations across a distributed network, rather than relying on any single centralized institution to broker every connection.
That body of work is a useful reference point for what serious, long-running art-science-technology collaboration can actually look like in practice, and for the institutional questions — funding, credit, disciplinary legitimacy, who counts as a “real” contributor — that this kind of work inevitably runs into no matter how good the underlying intentions are. It’s also a useful check on naivety: five decades in, Leonardo/ISAST’s own history shows this is slow, unglamorous institution-building, not a quick fix.
What We’re Actually Doing Right Now
To be clear about where we currently stand: this is a research question and hypothesis we are actively exploring, not a running program with named partners or a track record of delivered projects to report yet. We are not claiming an existing collaboration with Leonardo/ISAST, Roger Malina, or any specific art institution, and we’re deliberately not naming other organizations in this space (including ones we’ve discussed internally) until any such relationship is real and confirmed. If and when that changes, we’ll say so explicitly, with specifics — not in general terms.
Where This Connects
This sits directly upstream of our Science Communication focus area: both start from the belief that unequal access — to scientific literacy, to trust in science, to meaningful participation in how knowledge gets produced and used — is a solvable structural problem, not an unavoidable fact about how the public relates to science. Our science communication work deals with what the evidence says about trust and legitimacy; art is a specific, unconventional mechanism worth testing as part of the response.
Conclusion
We started from a specific discomfort: it isn’t enough to say the climate-communication lesson was “communicate the science better,” when science itself has an access problem that runs deeper than communication. Framing it that way pointed us toward a parallel we hadn’t originally set out to look for — that art has its own version of the same structural bottleneck, gatekept by funding rather than by credentials, but producing a similar outcome of narrow institutional control over what the public gets to see and participate in. Whether bringing these two fields together, with technology as an ambiguous but interesting third element, can actually loosen either bottleneck is an open empirical question, not something we’re claiming to have already answered. Leonardo/ISAST’s five-decade history in this space tells us it’s a serious, tractable field of practice — and also that it’s slow work with no guaranteed payoff. That’s the research programme we’re starting, not a project we’re announcing as finished.
